Gargamel's reason for catching Smurfs was to boil them into a solution that will transmute lead into gold. He just now found out that the Smurfs didn't have to be used ALIVE so he had no need to catch them or be sublte about traps anymore. Just bomb the shit out of them and scoop up the corpses.
