Actually, that's an Oboe. I know because I am an oboist. An English horn is similar, but it has a wider bell and the read is placed on a curved neck tube like the bassoon. And yes, I is really hard being in that spot while having to hit those notes with grace and vibrato. じゃね。

It is an oboe, then clarinet + small flute role, then the strings override them.

I must admit, I find it pretty funny that French horns are called as such and English horns are often referred to as "Cor Anglais" I've just listened through the whole tour de japon so far and...Well, it's just breathtaking. Truly amazing music.
