He looks much more like a traditional japanese ghost than a heartless but there are some heartless that look like traditional japanese ghosts so that's why it gave you that impression.

You should evolve your squirtle into wartortle. it looks cooler than squirtle and blastoise in my opinion

The water attack was waterfall, I think, considering effect and PP. The normal attack was probably Flail.
