ian curtis was not a fucking goth you fucking foo'. he wasn't even close. goths have taken a cue from him musically, but he was not one of them. they've also been influenced by jim morrison and david bowie but you wouldn't call them goth, would you? this is an iggy pop song, he's not a goth, is he?

...wow - someone belonging to any scene is not a free-thinker.

i love that........that is just plain good thinking.

Heh heh. I have tried to explain this to my non-goth friends, who think that there is only one type of goth culture. The only thing unifying the culture is a love of the darker side of life and a philosophy of open-mindedness and free-thinking, I guess.

It's beyond me why they were ever pigeonholed as either punk or goth. They were never that one dimensional to me,e.g. not consistently mopey enough for goth or angry enough for punk.Their having been more complex than that is the reason I still listen to them.

Trying to explain "Goth" is like trying to explain the concept of colours to a blind man. FYI, wearing certain clothes only pretains to the punk mentality, no goth. Ian Curtis was a goth. Wrap your heads around that one.

This gets so confusing although your expalanation makes sense. So at one point I was punk, I like a lot what might be considered "goth" songs, and I've ordered all the boxed DVD sets of Dark Shadows. And I mostly wear black. But I'm not goth or even punk, now. However, I completely understand what you're saying having been there in a previous generation. When i was punk it was definately a lifestyle. Have a blast and enjoy your identity.

Before the word "Goth" was coined to describe people who wore lots of black and went to Banshees, Bauhaus and Cure concerts. The people who did all these things were called "punks", or "New Romantics", if they happened to have frilly shirts on as well. The name was coined, and then applied retroactively, not by Goths, but by media people who didn't know what else to call us. Many of us liked old horror movies, maybe thats why.

I'm not asking a forum member if they're goth, I'm wondering why Siouxsie is considered goth. I don't think she considered herself goth, either, especially as goth wasn't really a genre when she began her musical career. There were a lot of punk bands before Siouxsie herself came along that were dark. Blue Oyster cult had some songs that could have been considered goth, for instance. Just curious.

Also, asking "why" someone is Goth is a really weird question. A goth is simply a person who finds "Goth" music and/or its associated visual style extremely appealing and considers themself a fan of it.

"Why do you think she's Goth?" No offense, but what is that even supposed to mean? First of all, I don't believe Siouxsie considered herself Goth (though there is an in-joke among Goth music fans that not saying you're Goth makes you even more Goth by proxy). If anything she was always more of a pop star with a fondness for using "dark" imagery and lyrics. As such she was influential in shaping the sound and look of the Goth subculture.
