Hesse was a badass author. Along with the absurdly tripped-out "Steppenwulf" and a bunch of others he wrote "Der Magister Ludi (The Glass Bead Game)". Read that shit, it's great. Steppenwulf is more action-packed, it may be a better Hesse introduction, but Der Magister Ludi and the others are outstanding also.
