Differences and non-duality

Back

Response to pyrrho314 http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=kTaue0igeMs It is differences all the way down, no doubt. That is why I like the fractal metaphor. Differences all the way; however, self-similar patterns seem to pop up way too often for difference to be ultimate. Pi is interesting in this context... it will remain forever incomplete and will never repeat, but even so, the circle it represents just goes around and around and around... The cosmos is non-dual, but I'm not trying to assert a form of monism. Whatever reality is, it seems incomplete precisely because we can never know what it is. That would require an objective point of view, and that's not what I'm trying to assert, either. Reality is still evolving. All aspects of it are interdependent and related, even if they don't know it. Knowing it in the traditional sense, again, would be impossible, as no knowledge is objective. All seeing is doing, all observation contributes something to what is observed. A lot of mystics say we should live in a cloud of unknowing for this reason. I don't think we need to give up knowledge entirely, though. We just have to put it back in context, see it as relative and relational, and drop the idea that it represents an externally existing, information containing objective world who's laws remain forever unchanging and whose behavior we can manipulate and design for our own purposes. This leads in practice to human activity and technology that runs counter to the flow of nature, which has no preconceived purposes or goals in mind but continual relationship with itself. Whatever patterns and dance moves arise in the tide of time, all remain connected to the ocean of eternity. The non-duality stuff is just trying to remind us that the differences we know exist in context, that no ultimate difference exists.
