(July 2)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] It might not be the tomatoes after all. The government's food safety chief says tomatoes aren't totally off the hook for the nation's salmonella outbreak ... but it might have been caused by something else. The reason government experts think tomatoes might not be the culprit -- people continue to get sick. Nearly 900 people have gotten ill because of the salmonella outbreak -- which first started nearly three months ago. Recently, 179 people got sick in June ... Well after warnings about tomatoes were issued. Tomatoes became the primary suspect after case-control studies in New Mexico and Texas -- conducted right after the outbreak started. But since people are still getting sick ...disease detectives are now exploring whether tomatoes and other produce are sharing a common packing or shipping site where both might become contaminated. Another possibility -- common water sources could be contaminated. Pressure is mounting on the Food and Drug Administration to solve the case ... Since the tomato industry has suffered millions of dollars in losses.
