Yume Hiko - obscure J-pop gem

Back

Seldom-seen video clip of an obscure J-pop gem from 1980. This song was used on an office copy machine ad, but in the wake of its recognition the tragic murder of John Lennon occurred and the company decided to use "Twist and Shout" instead. Thus the record completely died down, but left good impressions to a certain amount of music fans. This clip, in which one chorus has been edited due to time restrictions (to what?), features actual live performance by the artist and the band, rather than the record version which featured then-revolutionary analog sequencer Roland MC-8. 6 years later, the song got wider recognition via Kantonese cover version by Hong Kong singer Paula Tsui, but did not got beyond that territory. Singer and composer Mioko Yamaguchi (who also arranged the record version with the legendary musician Akira Inoue) later released 4 singles and 4 albums, finally got a hit in '83 with cosmetic company ad song "Koi wa Shunkan", but rarely turned up on public appearances. She later composed lots of pretty songs for hosts of younger female singers, notably Miki Imai, Marina Watanabe and CoCo. Despite lots of requests, this song and all other catalog from Mioko (including the hit song) have NOT BEEN REISSUED ON COMPACT DISCS, even on compilations! And even though her last record come from 1985, when over 70% of new album releases and many recent movers were transplanted on then-growing digital media. Of course there must be legal issues etc. but fans are wishing to have them on ever-fresh conditions! Don't say "violations", because without commercial will there are none. Wake up creators and vendors!
