President Hinckley passed away Sunday, January 27, 2008 and was mourned by millions of Mormons and non-Mormons around the world. He had earlier served 14 years as a counselor in the First Presidency, the top governing body of the Mormon Church (Mormonism), and as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the LDS Church for 20 years prior to that.
