Part 1 of a 2 part look at the Premier of the St. Petersburg Mikhailovsky Theater production of Spartacus . This version is choreographed by Georgy Kovtun and will be seen in a few days in London. It is a wonderful production that even includes a tiger on the stage, first in a cage and later being walked in front of the dancers by it's handler. The premier features regular Mikhailovsky star, Denis Matvienko , who is also a regular performer with the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow. Denis was the fourth dancer to win the rare Grand Prize in the 2005 international Moscow Ballet Competition , joining Nadezhda Pavlova in 1973, Irek Mukhamedov in 1981 and Andrei Batalov in 1997. His partner in this ballet is Irina Perren , who was ranked in Japan as one of the top 10 dancers in the world. Matvienko's wife, Anastacia Matvienko, plays the evil female star in this ballet. The premier shows Uliana Lopatkina and Oleg Vinogradov in the audience. Artistic director of the company, Faroukh Ruzimatov , is interviewed.
