La escuela andaluza de escultura

En Sevilla destaca la personalidad de Juan Martínez Montañés. De sus gubias salieron imágenes de Cristo, la Virgen y los santos que ponen de manifiesto su extraordinaria calidad técnica y su acendrada religiosidad, aspecto éste de capital importancia para captar en plenitud el mensaje evangélico que ellas encierran, siendo Montañés bautizado desde antiguo con el apelativo de "Dios de la madera". Juan de Mesa es el autor del Jesús del Gran Poder. Este Nazareno de vestir es el más popular paso sevillano, quizás porque cumple a la perfección su misión de conmover a los fieles, lo que consigue con un patetismo y una garra emocional únicos. La su obra maestra de Pedro Roldán es el retablo del Hospital de la Caridad de Sevilla. Dinámicas columnas salomónicas flanquean el grupo del Santo Entierro que protagoniza el conjunto. La riqueza ornamental y la luminosidad de los dorados crean un fastuoso marco para la escena principal, tratada con extraordinario realismo y fuerza expresiva. Luisa Roldán, la Roldana, realizó numerosos trabajos de imaginería, aunque su mayor aportación son sus obras de barro cocido y policromado, de pequeño tamaño, destinadas al culto privado y al de los conventos. En ellas representa temas religiosos interpretados con gran ternura y delicadeza, en escenas llenas de exquisita gracia que recuerdan el arte de Murillo. Granada tiene en Alonso Cano a su principal representante. En su obra prima la búsqueda de un ideal de belleza y de serena expresión. Para Cano la gracia prevalece sobre la intensidad, la delicadeza sobre la fuerza, la dulzura sobre el drama... Elegante y mesurado, rechaza la minuciosidad realista para preferir la apariencia arquetípica, con la que trata de alcanzar la perfección. Pedro de Mena aporta a la escuela granadina unas cualidades distintas a las de Cano; no se interesó por la elegante serenidad de este maestro, sino que por el contrario, concibió sus figuras con un penetrante ascetismo, de gran intensidad realista y apasionadas expresiones de concentración interior. Las cualidades de la escuela granadina, en la que se fundían las influencias de Cano y Mena, llegaron hasta el siglo XVIII gracias a la familia Mora, integrada por el padre Bernardo de Mora y sus hijos José y Diego.
